Before we answer this question, let us understand what Zero Waste means.
What is Zero Waste?
Zero Waste, simply put means NO TRASH! Zero Waste is a set of principles and a way of life where you ensure no trash is sent to landfills ,incinerators or the ocean. Being mindful and taking responsibility for what you throw is what zero waste means in the simplest terms. The ultimate goal of zero waste is the conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, REUSE, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.
Why is it important to go Zero Waste now ?
We are in the midst of fighting a global pandemic, that we weren’t prepared for. But we have a chance at dealing with waste disposal, usage of fossil fuels and ultimately climate change, and if we act now, we just might be able to make a difference in about 50 years from now.
More than 30,000 tonnes of single use plastic waste is dumped in landfills or into our oceans every single day. Single-use plastics are goods that are made primarily from fossil fuel based chemicals (petrochemicals) and are meant to be disposed off right after use—often, in mere minutes. Single-use plastics are most commonly used for packaging and service ware, such as bottles, wrappers, straws, and bags. Right now, the planet is awash with pandemic plastic. Medical waste, latex gloves, disposable surgical masks, PPE kits, visors and so on. Online purchases, restaurant deliveries and take aways are all using single use plastics which pose a serious threat to our planet. In our urge to deal with the pandemic, we are giving way to a much bigger problem now.
The more fossil fuels we burn, the more trash we throw away, the more animals we eat and the more plastic we dump into the oceans and landfills, the hotter and hotter Earth gets. At this point, we’re literally setting out planet on fire.
What can we do to save our planet and how can we go Zero Waste?
Our everyday consumption choices contribute to climate change and influence extreme weather events around the world. There are SO many little things that we can do to make a big difference. Just by changing the way we get ready in the morning, we can make a HUGE impact.
I’ve been doing a lot of research in the past 10 months and have started making conscious buying choices and changes to my lifestyle to help me and my family lead a zero waste life. I’m no expert, but I know that I’ve definitely been bitten by this zero waste bug, and I’m only glad! Making all these changes to small things that I never thought was a huge player in contributing to single use plastic consumption and waste disposal challenges, I’ve come to understand that this is just the beginning. While some of these changes like carrying a water bottle every time I step out of home, switching to reusable cloth masks rather than the disposable ones, growing whatever vegetables I can at home to reduce our food miles, switching over to use menstrual cups have all been pretty easy. I’m still constantly on thje lookout for finding alternatives to so many things that we use daily, which are an unknown cause to this problem. My urge to share my knowledge and zero waste journey with you all, is what gave birth to Down to Earth™. Come along and we will explore new products and ways to go zero waste and save our planet from yet another disastrous pandemic!
